Harrow and Hillingdon Geological Society
Field trip to Ireland
June 2010

The Harrow & Hillingdon Geological Society is running a field trip to Western Ireland from 19-26 June 2010 and would welcome members of other societies. The trip will cover the geology of counties Galway and Mayo, e.g. the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and the resulting Caledonian Orogeny and their effects on the rocks. The leader is John Arthurs, ex-director Northern Ireland Geological Survey and now a consultant exploration geologist.

It will be based in Leenane (Leenaun) on Killary Harbour. We shall have a coach for the week, travelling from, and returning to, Dublin (make own way from UK to Dublin). The itinerary includes the Joyce Country, Connemara, NW Mayo and Achill Island.

The cost (based on two sharing a room) will be £645-£815 depending on the number of participants (minimum 15). It includes one night B&B in Dublin (19th), 6 nights half-board in Leenane, coach and leader but NOT travel to Dublin from the UK. Single supplement £110.

There is an option to spend a day or two extra in Dublin before the start if you wish. If you wish to join the trip please contact Allan Wheeler, Field Trip Secretary, allan.wheeler1@ntlworld.com, T: 01344 455451
